Functional or Industry Expert Tracks

For MBB / T2 firms with expert tracks, do firms aim for having more of a functional expert, or a industry expert?

As I'm going out and networking, I'm not sure whether or not to position myself from a particular functional background (Commercial - Strategy, Global Marketing, Business Development), or from a industry background (Life Sciences / Medical Technology) in my outreach.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, MBB and T2 firms often have both functional and industry expert tracks, and the emphasis can vary depending on the firm and the specific practice area. Here's how you might approach positioning yourself:

  1. Functional Expertise:

    • If your background is in areas like Commercial Strategy, Global Marketing, or Business Development, you could position yourself as a functional expert. This is particularly valuable if the firm has strong functional practices (e.g., strategy, operations, marketing, etc.) that align with your experience.
    • Functional expertise can be more versatile, allowing you to work across multiple industries while leveraging your specific skill set.
  2. Industry Expertise:

    • If you have deep knowledge or experience in a specific industry like Life Sciences or Medical Technology, positioning yourself as an industry expert could be advantageous. This is especially true for niche industries where specialized knowledge is critical, such as biotech or med-tech.
    • Industry expertise is often sought after for roles that require deep understanding of market dynamics, regulatory environments, and technical nuances.
  3. Combination Approach:

    • Many successful candidates position themselves as having both functional and industry expertise. For example, you could highlight your ability to apply Commercial Strategy (functional) within the Life Sciences/Medical Technology space (industry). This dual positioning can make you more attractive to firms looking for well-rounded experts.
  4. Networking Strategy:

    • When networking, tailor your positioning based on the firm and the individuals you're speaking with. For example, if you're reaching out to someone in a Life Sciences practice, emphasize your industry expertise. If you're speaking with someone in a broader strategy or marketing practice, focus on your functional skills.

Ultimately, the choice between functional and industry positioning depends on your strengths, interests, and the specific opportunities you're targeting. If you're unsure, you can start with a broader approach and refine your positioning based on the feedback you receive during networking conversations.
