Getting a job at Bain
Hey Everybody, I am above my pay-grade and need some help from you all.
I have been lucky enough to meet some Bain employees this past week, and have fallen in love with the company. I think the work that they do is fascinating, and even find the mundane activities to be the best that I have heard. I understand that these people are recruiting, but so are all of the other firms that don't make such a strong impression.
Unfortunately, I am a sophomore and cannot pursue opportunities with them this summer, so I am curious as to what the best experiences I could gain going into next fall's recruiting season.
My contacts told me to find something analytical, but that is very broad considering the amount of careers that involve number heavy work. So far in recruiting I have an offer from a fortune 50 company, a mm ib (rx), and a recently ipo'd "startup" that will all be "analytical". I am also in the process with a government agency, but can't consider it until I have an offer.
I am also trying not to limit myself too much because I have not really hit it off with any of the other consulting firms (big 4 and McK), and would rather do something at a boutique ibank or boutique consulting firm than work at one of those places.
I have no experience with any of this, and want to hear your opinions. What do you think are the best ways to prepare for a potential job at Bain?

It sounds like you have a lot of good options. The go to is working for a well renowned company (one that the resume screener would recognize just from reading your resume).
That said, as long as you have a good experience and it's something interesting you can talk about, you should be fine.
Quite honestly, if you're meeting these people through OCR, keeping in contact with them for the next 1 or 2 years is the most important thing you can do to secure the interview.

While I didn't target Bain in my job search, I never saw any job postings for them, either. I know Bain, Golden Gate, etc. have historically been exclusively ex-consultants (GGC until this year didn't even interview bankers). Even the new Huntsman/Gay PE shop is looking only at consultants. Does anyone know of any ex-bankers that have interviewed or landed jobs at Bain? What about straight out of b-school?
GameTheory, I have a couple pre-MBA contacts there - one came from consulting and the other came from banking.
Read the resumes of the team on the Bain Capital website and see if any came from banks.

Thanks. Far too many profiles on that website (and not divided by position, just location) to click each one looking for associates and backgrounds. I spot checked and didn't see any bankers (alot from PWC backgrounds though?).
Its also interesting to note that 13/15 of the MDs have MBAs from Harvard.
Do you know the name/location of the Huntsman/Gay group?
Not sure if it has a name yet. I got an email about it asking for consultant referrals - it's based out of two offices, SLC and PA.
Very helpful jajaja. I know they do recruit from Wharton, though. One Whartonite with no prior PE experience landed there (had M/B/B though).
Unless I totally missed something, I did not see associates listed on the Bain Capital website.
Is it me or are a lot of those Bain Capital guys from Dartmouth? I checked those profies and the ones on Bain Capital Ventures and it seems Dartmouth is as represented as Harvard...
Does Bain have some sort of Dartmouth connection/preference?

- associates hired both from consultnig and banking, but former more common
- at least at mba level they don't have job postings. they go through their networks and target resumebooks
