Help! Offer from PwC Consulting
Hi there,
I have received an offer from PwC Hong Kong in their operations consulting department. I was glad to receive the offer, however, it turns out that the remuneration is rather low, at HKD10k+ per month, without any housing allowance (I am not from Hong Kong).
I was thinking whether to take up this offer, as the pay cannot even pay for my accommodation. I have spoken to my parents about this and they reluctantly agree to partially sponsor for my housing for 1 or 2 years.
Is this pay reasonable? Should I take up the offer? Is this worth the investment?
If you have no other job, take it and get a better one while you work.
I'm actually in the midst of interviewing with a BB for a role in operations in my hometown. Not exactly what I like to do, but the money sure is tempting.
Any ideas on exit opportunities for PwC?

It's quite low but probably within range for a local HK job. That's the way it is.
Yea I heard that it is the norm for a local job there, but as a foreigner, really hard to survive let alone have some savings. Does anyone know anything about career progression and pay raise after first year?

13K is incredibly low for consulting in HK. Is your position front-office, client facing? Or is it internal? Also, which country are you moving there from?
I guess for the first few years of my career the increment in salary is on par with other divisions such as the audit and assurance, I don't possess a strong command of cantonese though..
And yes, it is a client facing role, or so I heard from my interviewers.
Assuming you applied for an expat position, 13K is incredibly low. You'll have a tough time enjoying HK living. If you applied for a local position, well.. I don't know.. I don't know what the local salaries are.
The Big 4 in HK is known for its low salary at entry levels. 13k is avg. local salary (a bit on the low side, MT programs are usually around 20k), I heard its less than 10k for audit entry positions. Many join the Big 4 for the CPA and to lateral out after 2-3 years.
It is almost impossible to survive on 13k a month if you need to pay for your own housing.
What I am more concerned with are the exit opportunities. I know it is not as good as compared to MBB but am I right to say that I will not be in a bad position for business schools after say 2 years?
You won't be in a "bad" position but it's also not a good position. Too many Big 4 types applying for B-school and 2 years at a Big 4 may not be enough. I heard MBB consultants apply after 2-3 years and they're pretty much the youngest bunch.
In that case, what about apply to other non-MBB consulting house with better reputation (Roland Berger, OW etc)?
That would be wise. In my book, firms like Roland Berger and OW are of higher standing compared to PwC anyway.

Actually I'm considering between this and a BB ops job in my home country. Of course, the ops job pays much more but it isn't what I'll like to do and also, I heard the exit opportunities for ops are very limited. Any thoughts on this?
