Help, Which of these options is the best segway to Strategy Consulting?

Hi Guys,

Currently have two Options, one which is at a Mid-Tier/B4 Consultancy (MC) not in their strategy team; and another at a similar B4 in a unique service offering which does pure Modelling.

Which of the two would you think is best to follow through in regards to getting experience to transition to MBB. The reason I thought Modelling was the fact that I would believe strategy consultants would need good modelling skills and this would potentially separate me apart from the other candidates however I'm unsure how strong that value proposition is.

Best, Jax

It really depends what modelling entails. Do you mind telling us more about it? Overall, I would tend to favor MC experience as it will definitely teach you transferable skills for SC and understanding implementation is usually a good asset when working in SC.

Hi Ruhm,

Yeah thats what I've been thinking as-well. The modelling division i'm in really entails understanding the commercial side of a Business e.g. say a Mining Project or perhaps a Investment Bank and then building a model for their needs. Be it an economic model, or even a model audit of what the Bank has done previously just as a check; Generally the other service lines of the B4 will bring in the work, and sometimes we'll bolt on to a M&A transaction/Audit/Consulting project to help them with whatever their modelling needs may be.

I guess on the other side i'm still not exactly sure what I want to do; I think SC is it and trying to figure out which option has the best exit opportunities.

P.S The thing with MC; is that I've been put in what they call "People & Organisational" or a similar vertical rather than something more Operations/Finance focused which is why i'm slightly concerned.
