How Early Can You Transfer Offices at MBB

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a senior in college. I interned at a top bank in NYC over the summer, but I knew I wanted to do consulting full-time and I was fortunate enough to receive an offer from MBB. The only problem is that my offer is from a regional office near my school, since this is the only office that recruits at my school. I already accepted my offer and am thrilled to be doing consulting after graduation, but I was wondering how long do people usually have to work before they are able to transfer to another location? My SO accepted an offer in NYC after graduation, I have a lot of family outside/around the city, and I really just love NYC, so I would really prefer to be based out the NYC office.

I know in order to transfer, you have to be a top performer and have good connections. However, given that my MBB firm does regional staffing, how can I network/get staffed on a case with NYC partners so that they know who I am?

Also, is it possible for new analysts to transfer after only 1 year on the job, or is it only possible after 2 years on the job?

Last question: if I am interested in possibly pursuing private equity as an exit opp (in NYC), will I be at a disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint coming from a regional office? If so, what can I do to best position myself for PE recruiting in NYC? How early should I begin networking with PE firms and recruiters? A few months after I start the job, given that PE recruiting typically begins about 6-9 months into your first year?

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

1) Office transfer completely depends on firm. From what you've said sounds like Bain to me, which is by far the most regional MBB. Talk to your recruiter and be honest about wanting to go to NY. See what he/she says.

2) If you're pretty set on going to PE, why enter consulting? Although MBB-> PE is possible, you'll have a much easier time trying to recruit from IB at a top bank.
