How to get referral from partner?

Hi everyone. I have a networking called set with a partner at an MBB with a similar background and I was wondering how the process of getting a referral works. I do believe asking for one at end of call may seem transactional so are they supposed to mention it? Or do you have a follow up call (or email?) close to the process beginning asking for one? Can people tell their stories of how they were able to turn their networking call into a referral so I have an idea on how the consulting world works?

  1. you find a role on their website and say that you believe it might be a good fit
  2. after building rapport, ask whether they are hiring, how their resourcing plans look like, (..)
  3. after carrying out research (i.e. linkedin, website, online publications, ..) you believe that a certain team in their firm would need you and sell yourself.
  4. the contact refers you to their HR team by themselves (happened to me before)
  5. any other ideas?
