industry operations>top14JD>MBB?

I've seen a few other similar threads around here, and i thought I'd ask if anyone had any specific advice.

Graduated a number of years ago from undergrad at a top state school with degrees in math and econ and mediocre (low 3s) GPA. Worked a few years running numbers and helping manage supply chain and customer service for a fortune500. Left there for a top14 law school where I have good grades and involvement.

MBB seem to recruit law students from my school according to the emails i get from them, but I don't know what to expect from them.

How much of a crapshoot is it going to be just getting the first interview? How much is not having an MBA going to be a hindrance for me, and will other non top3 firms even look at me?

So I just went law school --> MBB

It is tough to make happen. Bain and Boston will ask about your undergrad GPA. McKinsey will not.

You will interview against other non-MBA kids so don't worry about that.

With your background, and assuming MBB is impressed with your law school, you should be able to get a first round interview. Do they actually come to your school to do OCI? That is the best way to do it. The only other guy to get an offer from MBB at my school in the past 5 years did it through OCI. I did it by applying online (should have bidded at OCI but did not).

From there, though, it gets tricky. Very few law students get hired. It sounds like you have a strong business background... good... that gives you a shot. Every year the entire business law review at my school applies and every year they got blown out of the water mostly because they had zero business experience (my guess, anyway).

The problem is you have a 1-2% chance of getting an offer once you walk into the 1st round interview. It is tough.

I am happy to provide you as much assistance as you would like. I have posted my thoughts about how to prepare for the interviews on here before. PM me if you like.

I don't think any other consulting firms outside of the top 3 are really geared towards integrating JDs.

Vyger,

Am I correct in that you did not have any work experience when you got your JD? In effect then, you were able to jump to the "consultant" role (instead of "associate" consultant) after 3 years, which is faster than the traditional route of 2 yrs MBB > 2 yers B-school > post-mba consultant.

No, I had over 8 years of significant leadership and business experience before going to law school. Frankly, I would have been a great applicant to any top MBA program as well, but I thought law was what I wanted to do. Turns out I was wrong. I am lucky I was able to break into consulting.

That said, lots of my law school peers do try out for MBB every year with no significant work experience. The fact that I am one of two people to get MBB in 5 years from my school may say a thing or two about the importance of either work experience or being a near genius (the other was top of the class and had a JD/MBA from our school... which is a good school).
