Intern advice: should i give feedback on a poor internship experience & let them know I'm no longer looking for a return offer
I am currently interning at global payments company in their consulting divison. We just had our mid-internship review and I am the best performing intern and am on track to receive a return offer for their graduate programme.
The issue is that I have accepted an offer from another firm that is more in line with my career interests and in the city where I want to work. The internship pay was shitty (half of what I was earning at an NGO & when I tried to negotiate the offer with the HR person she said I should borrow money from my parents & I know the pay was not at all market rate for internships in my country) and neither the internship or graduate program seem very structured (there have been interns who have had no work either because of poor planning or lack of access) and there seems to be a boys club vibe I’m struggling to accept (I’m one of the only women on this team).
I really respect my manager and the team I’ve worked with and they think I’m going to return as a graduate and I’m wondering if its a good idea to let them know I’m no longer looking for a return offer? And should I give them feedback on the internship experience or will I sound unprofessional/whiny?
I think you can just be honest without disrespecting your manager or anyone who works there. If asked for feedback be truthful but also show appreciation for the experience, even if wasn't perfect. There's nothing wrong with telling them you're not looking for a return offer and you can literally explain the reasoning you used in this post. HR is constantly looking to make improvements so I think they would appreciate the feedback as long as you keep it constructive and not complaining. Stay in touch with your manager if you would like--never know when they might be a useful contact down the road.
Definitely don't say anything until the internship is over.
Personally I wouldn't go into much detail on why you're not accepting return offer at the risk of burning bridges.
