International internship as an American student

Rising freshman at a semi-target that will be interning at a big 4 advisory/consulting in another country. When applying for future positions in America, would firms raise any red flags, or just ask why and move on?

And for honesty's sake - yes its 100% a nepo hire

Firms are unlikely to raise significant red flags about an international internship, even if it was a "nepo hire." Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Value of International Experience: An international internship can be a unique talking point in interviews. It demonstrates adaptability, cultural exposure, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. These are qualities that many firms appreciate.

  2. Addressing the "Why": If asked why you interned abroad, focus on the professional and personal growth aspects. Highlight how the experience broadened your perspective, exposed you to different work environments, or helped you develop skills that are transferable to roles in the U.S.

  3. Nepo Hire Concerns: While nepotism might be a factor, it’s not something you need to disclose unless directly asked. Instead, emphasize the work you did, the skills you gained, and the value you brought to the team. Firms care more about what you learned and how you can apply it to their organization.

  4. Potential Challenges: Some WSO threads suggest that internships abroad, especially in less structured environments, might not always provide the same level of rigor as U.S.-based internships. Be prepared to articulate the tangible skills and experiences you gained to counter any skepticism.

In summary, as long as you can effectively communicate the value of your international experience and how it aligns with your career goals, it’s unlikely to be a major issue.

I'm an international student as well so I can relate as well - I'm a rising senior and this summer I'm working in the US. My freshman and sophomore internships were both international and this is true for most of my friends as well. It doesn't really make a difference for internships as they just want to see experience and you're not expected to get a US summer internship that early as well. For FT though I do think they'd like to see US experience but that's different.
