Lateral moves from Tier 2 (T2) consulting firms to MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) are not very common, especially at the analyst/associate level. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Before 2 Years of Experience:

    • Lateral moves to MBB at the analyst/associate level are rare. Most firms prefer to hire fresh graduates or post-MBA candidates directly into these roles.
    • If someone does lateral before 2 years, it is typically due to exceptional circumstances, such as a strong network, outstanding performance, or a specific skill set that MBB is seeking.
  2. After 2 Years of Experience:

    • Lateral moves become slightly more common after 2 years, especially for post-MBA roles. However, even then, it is not the norm.
    • Consultants with 2+ years of experience at T2 firms may lateral into MBB at the post-MBA level (e.g., Consultant/Associate). This often involves stepping back in seniority to align with MBB's career progression structure.
  3. Challenges of Lateral Moves:

    • Lateral hires often forgo the network and relationships they have built at their current firm.
    • MBB tends to prioritize candidates who fit their recruiting timelines and processes, making lateral moves less frequent.
  4. Key Considerations:

    • Timing of openings at MBB is critical for lateral hires.
    • Lateral hires at the associate level are uncommon, as noted in WSO discussions, and may not always offer significant benefits unless the move aligns with long-term career goals.

In summary, while lateral moves from T2 to MBB are possible, they are not very common, particularly before 2 years of experience. Most consultants aiming for MBB prefer to pursue an MBA and re-enter at the post-MBA level.

Bain did a cycle of Feb hiring this year, so did LEK. So some recent grads were able to lateral within a year

Can you talk more about this, something I would be interested in. When did recruiting start for that

Most firms don't hire lateral from other T2 firms in normal years. MBB did lateral hires this year but it was mainly because they under-hired from class of 24 and then when work picked up they realized they needed talent quicker than they could start the 25 hires. Additionally, most hires came from boutique firms or were waiting on offers elsewhere, I don't think poaching is the norm.

That being said, if the opportunity presents itself definitely take the upgrade, the only downside is paying back your sign-on to the place you're currently at
