Is it worth it to hire a coach for recruiting?

I am currently pivoting towards consulting because somebody from an MBB office in the middle east contacted me directly and asked if I'm interested. My school dominates consulting junior positions so I'll try to take that to my advantage.

Having no interest in consulting before, I just haven't yet made myself familiar with how it goes. I know for MBB there are two parts of the interviews - fit & cases, just like in finance. Again, I am falling short in terms of technical knowledge. My school has a good case library and I've been reading through it.

Interestingly, it seems that peer-to-peer coaching is pretty popular in consulting. The problem is online coaches are insane, they have to be soulless creatures with these prices. They charge thousands for prep/coaching programs. I know their premise is "you'll get high salary" but as a struggling university student, I cant afford that. At the same time, they have pretty assertive advertising with near perfect success rates. Now what do I do? Is it really worth it to get a coach or can I just figure out things on my own if I work hard enough???

it’s casing with people who know how to do it which is helpful. if you can get (10) past successful students /current professional consultants to each run 1 case with you, you don’t need a coach

Honestly no and I would just focus on getting through enough cases to not look at a complete dullard in the first round. If they are contacting you like this they already are interested in you, you just have to not fail miserably. I would focus a lot more on brushing up on your communication skills and preparing a few compelling stories/narratives you can bring up in relation to your resume/motivation blablabla. At the end of the day that is what you will be doing most of the time in consulting anyway–presenting "stuff" in a compelling and interesting way.

I went through consulting recruiting this year and decided to use a coach for only 2 sessions after a few months of casing with friends who were also recruiting for consulting. I personally decided to use the coach as I felt he could help me get to the next level in casing, and I think he helped in that area. Although I do believe it helped me get the MBB offer, I don't think it's necessary; just good to have if you feel you're not at that level yet.

That said, if you don't have much time to prep, I would say the best way is to have someone who's gone through MBB recruiting or is currently in the firm help you with casing. If you can't do this, then the coach is worth it for you as they would help accelerate your progress, and they will know where you're lacking more than your peers. However, most of the prep will still depend on your own hard work.

If you can't find students or consultants to case with, then yes. But you can definitely do it without hiring a coach. The key is to case with people who have been through the process successfully and understand it well.

I'm happy to get you started :). I'm starting at an MBB and can case with you if you wanna dm me sometime. Hope this helps!

I got MBB offers and I also used a coach for only two sessions at the end of my prep (total $300). That was helpful in my opinion.
