LBS MiM vs Oxbridge Physics for MBB London
As the title suggests, would doing the LBS MiM course for my Masters year hurt my recruitment chances for MBB London office compared to if I stayed on the integrated Physics Masters? I have heard that the LBS MiM places well for consulting but sends few graduates to MBB London. I have a strong profile otherwise with regards to past internships + extracurricular so this is purely from a school branding point of view. Thank you!
An integrated Masters add no value to your CV because it's essentially a 4-year Undergraduate degree. You can spin it as much as you want, but people will see through it. Conversely, the Oxford + LBS combination will be very appealing on your CV and give you a better chance at recruitment (more focus on cases, better on-campus recruitment opportunities etc.). I would go for the LBS MiM.
Ah I see, thank you for the insight! From speaking to LBS students about this, they all mentioned that they send way fewer people to MBB London compared to Oxbridge so I was a little worried. But I guess they have a smaller class size, and a lot of students are international so they return to work in their home country. Do agree that the application resources will definitely be a lot better and networking culture will be a lot stronger!
LBS is still one of the best business schools in Europe. Maybe them send few people to MBB London, but just like LSE I guaranteed you that they place well in MBB in other countries (e.g. MBB Paris, MBB DACH etc.). If you speak an additional language, then you can use this to your advantage and apply for non-London MBB offices. Look, aiming for MBB is great because they are the best in their field, but try to distance yourself from the notion that MBB is the be all and end all of consulting. LBS will still place well in T2s, Big 4 strategy firms (e.g. S&, PEY etc.) and other well known firms.
In my opinion, the bottom line is that doing an integrated masters will add no value to your CV, especially since you're sticking with the same subject. An alternative for you would be to simultaneously apply for FT MBB roles AND masters. MBBs do hire straight from UG and if you believe that the Oxford brand name will carry you, then you should be able to pass the CV screener with just a UG. This way you have time to test the Oxford name theory, and if it fails you can always apply to MiMs at other schools e.g. LSE or Cambridge
Oxbridge, no brainer. University is more important than degree by a mile in the UK.
From my understandings though LBS is pretty much on par with Oxbridge for consulting. I know the specific degree doesn't really matter but even if I go to LBS for my Masters, I will still have an Oxbridge undergrad on my CV, so do you think that will hold some weight still?
Strongly encourage you to go Oxbridge. Physics > MiM actually as well from a course perspective btw. Unless you really want to do a MiM and live in London it should be an easy choice to be honest.
But an integrated masters means OP already has Oxford on their CV. So doing an integrated masters makes no sense from the brand name angle.
Oxford > LBS for recruiting, doesn't matter if you already did it for undergrad
Do your MPhys and apply for internships then do a MiM if you didn't get in from Oxford.
