Limited number of promotion positions?

Hi everyone

Have a read a lot around the promotion path in consulting, but one thing I have struggled to ascertain is whether there are limited promotion slots at each round and they go to the top x people, or whether there are no limits and it's purely down to the number of deserving candidates...?

For example, does a firm have a fixed number of senior consulting positions at any one time, or would they have more/less depending on whether each individual meets the criteria?

It varies by firm but both are true and both are used in evaluating you. If you suck but they would theoretically have place for you, they will let you go. If you're very good (imagine being the 11th best out of 20) but only have 10 spots for the position ahead, they could either fire you or keep you in that position for another 6-12 months or whenever they can promote you again but as mentioned, it depends on the firm.
