MBB Case Study Interviews

Hi, WSO community, any advice you can give me? If I have an interview with BCG in Mexico, being from a non-target school, do you think I can make it, I'm already moving forward in the process, and it seems to me that I only need to pass the case study interviews

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key tips to ace your BCG case study interviews, especially as a non-target candidate:

  1. Case Practice is Key: Aim to practice as many cases as possible. One user mentioned doing 47 cases before landing offers from McKinsey and BCG. Use resources like Victor Cheng's Case Interview Secrets and LOMS to refine your approach.

  2. Focus on Weaknesses: Identify areas where you struggle (e.g., quant, structuring, creativity) and specifically address them. Practicing with peers or mentors who can stress-test you is invaluable.

  3. Simulate Real Conditions: Practice cases with people you don’t know well to simulate the pressure of a real interview. Wear a suit and practice under stressful conditions to prepare for distractions or challenging interviewers.

  4. Networking Helps: If you haven’t already, leverage your network to connect with BCG consultants in Mexico. Even as a non-target candidate, cold-emailing and building relationships can help you gain insights and potentially get internal support.

  5. Be Structured and Clear: During the case, structure your thoughts clearly, communicate effectively, and always explain your reasoning. BCG values logical problem-solving and clear articulation.

  6. Prepare Behavioral Stories: Don’t neglect the personal experience interview (PEI). Think of compelling stories that showcase leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. Practice these with peers to ensure they’re concise and impactful.

  7. Stay Confident: As a non-target candidate, you’ve already made it far in the process, which is a testament to your potential. Confidence and preparation will help you stand out.

Genuine question that will serve you well in life and in any future consulting career: What difference does it make?

If random strangers on the internet think you can make it, what will you do? You'll prep for case interviews and do the best you can.

If they don't, what will you do? Will you give up and not bother with the interview? Of course not. You'll prep for case interviews and do the best you can, because any other choice would be objectively stupid -- the potential cost of not doing the interview is incredibly high, and the benefit of not doing it is low.

Nothing anyone tells you will change what you choose to do, so why bother asking the question? It's a waste of time. You know that the literal only course of action there that makes any sense is to prep for case interviews and do the best you can. Don't bother gathering information if that information isn't relevant to your decisions or your actions.

Best of luck to you!
