MBB contacts - what can they do?

i may have an indirect connection to a pre-partner level (project/engagement/case-manager/leader) consultant at an MBB. i don't know said contact, but worked briefly with his brother.

i was wondering if that was enough of a connection for me to legitimately contact him. could anybody please tell me how acceptable that would be please? will be much appreciated, thanks.

i would also be very appreciative if anyone could point me in the general direction of what to tell the brother (i want him to introduce us, naturally) and then what should i tell said contact? i've never done this before and would be very happy if anyone could share some of their experience with me.

also, how much can a contact inside mbb do for someone reaching out to them?

thanks

It depends on how well you know his brother and how comfortable you feel asking for help.

Typically contacts inside a firm can forward your resume, which tends to in a sense make it float to the top of the pile. However, you still have to be playing the same league as all the other applicants to be seriously considered (ie. a 2.9 GPA with a contact still won't make the cut at MBB).

nah, i think i have a solid resume, just that not from a target (good institution all the same, but no pedigree)

thanks for the input. any advice tho about how to approach them? (each one of them)

edit: any specific advice as to what i'm supposed to try and achieve from this? what can said contact do for me?

Think you should be straight up. ie: "I'm really interested in [MBB firm] and I understand that your brother is at the [region] office. Do you think he would mind if I contacted him to ask him a few questions?"

Consultants are all about reaching out, but I personally don't think its gonna do anything for you until the later round interviews, and only if they know you well.

Good luck.

ringtailedlemurIt should be enough to get you a first round, assuming you have a quality resume + the brother likes you.

And the guy likes his brother...

i appreciate the input, thanks
