MBB Housing / Transportation Allowance

Hi monkeys,

Did anyone receive an offer that includes a large portion of what might otherwise be the base salary earmarked for "housing and transportation allowance"?

If so, do you know how this may be spent? Can I buy a car with this money? Can I make payments on a car with this money?

A car is an investment, but if I otherwise have to spend all this money on a luxurious apartment I'll never be in, I'd be kind of bitter.

Cheers.

Really dude? THAT's the picture you choose when asking about cars? You better hope James Hunt doesn't see this...

Additionally, very few cars can be considered 'investments'

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

It's an international office with lots of dune buggying and beach driving opportunities. I've had a boner for Cherokees since as long as I can remember.

Obviously the car depreciates. But buying a car is much moreso an investment of this "Housing and Transportation Allowance" than renting a car or spending it on cabs.

I think generally people considered a car an expense, not an investment. Unless you're talking like a classic Rolls or Merc or a Bugatti or something.

One can resell a car and at least get /some/ of the money back. I cannot resell an apartment I rented.

Anyone got any info on how these allowances can be used?

my housing / transportation package is X, and my base salary is 2X, bringing total package to 3X + bonuses (sign-on and performance) + travel perks + relocation expenses reimbursed

Great, thanks for your perspective. In the country I'll be living in, it seems as though real estate agents prefer / require renters to pay for the entire year, so maybe that's why my stipend is so high.
