McKinsey BTO or Accenture
Hi,
I have an offer from McK BTO and Accenture Strategy Practice. I am trying to determine which one will be a better option for me. I have a significant amount of experience in IT, and have been trying to get more into strategy. Does BTO restrict me from doing so? Will Accenture be a better bet for me?

I haven't worked in either group, but I'm pretty familiar with McK's BTO, and Accenture is a known commodity. BTO does not do real hands-on IT implementation/etc.; instead, they do strategic stuff that pertains to technology, so it's definitely a step away from pure IT. I think that BTO Business Analysts can end up on non-BTO projects, but I'm not 100% sure.
Accenture Strategy does much lower-level stuff than MBB strategy, and it's an unimpressive brand. I'm not sure there's anyone for whom choosing Accenture over McKinsey is a good idea. McKinsey will open far more doors, and if you're coming from IT it's a pretty natural segue into strategy consulting (albeit technology-focused strategy).
1.) Actually, I admitted that I haven't worked in either group for this very reason. You can take my sweeping generalizations for whatever you think they're worth. 2.) If everyone here reserved comment to places they'd actually worked, then commenting would give away who you work for. Though I'm not in either group, I am pretty familiar with both places (you know, I do have friends and family). 3.) Do you have a particular disagreement with anything I said? I'd be happy to discuss constructive disagreement.
Sorry! Should have mentioned earlier that the offers that I have are both for post-MBA positions (i will be graduating in June 2011). I am trying to figure out which will be a better option for exit into corporate roles later on. My only concern with McK BTO is that I will not be able to shake off my IT history and in some sense will reinforce it with the BTO work experience.

Even though Accenture and McKinsey are not on par on strategy work, they still do some neat stuff in the area. Unless someone really wants to go in the CIO/CTO track, asking them to take McK BTO is not very different than asking someone to take GS Ops over say Wells Fargo/Wachovia IB. And if someone really wants to do IT, why not just go with the firm known for IT.
I spoke with a McKinsey recruiter last week about their BTO analyst roles. She mentioned that they are the same as general analysts, but spend ~40% of their time on strategy projects with a "technology" spin. She also mentioned that general BA's can transfer into BTO - and vice versa.
I've heard this as well but this was not in the U.S. (Abu Dhabi). I also heard pay/bonus structre was inline with other groups. The guy who worked in the BTO group said it was a lot more technical than the classic management consulting roles.
McK BTO No questions.
