McKinsey Operations & Business Technology

Hi all,

It seems like McK recently created two practices besides traditional strategy practice. The recruiting process seems to be different for these two, from the general recruiting.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience or knows somebody in either of these practices, and can speak about them? Are they valid options? Do they charge similar hourly rates as general McK consultants?

I thought these were still part of the generalist pool of things they could do?

If that is true, recruiting process is exactly the same.

I don't know anyone with a firsthand experience, but having successfully gone through recruiting recently, I know that a seperate recruiter reached out to me from Mck Implementation Group (MIG) but I declined. Also, I know that Mck generalists (stategy consultants) do operations and BT work, so I'll assume that recruiting is same for all these (strategy, operations and BT).

MIG would be through a different recruiting.

At least at the MBA level, McK recruits directly from campus for generalist, Ops, BTO, Marketing & Sales, and more recently, MIG (which I know very little about). As a generalist, you could spend time in any of the practices, but practice-focused recruiting allows those who want to specialize early to do so. The recruiting process is pretty similar across all of them, except many close-list events and cases will be practice-specific.

Are they valid options? Not sure what you mean. If you're not interested in those particular content areas, probably not. Billing rates? Contrary to popular, this can vary from project to project, but on average I have no clue. With the possible exception of MIG (don't know anyone doing it), they all pay the same.

What I think your asking, is in terms of prestige, they are all relatively the same. And BA/Associate alignments in these competencies are soft.

MIG is the only one that might be down a notch in prestige. And I don't think MIG people can do the "typical" McKinsey work.
