Medical Student Looking to Enter Consulting
I am a penultimate year medical student who is considering a career in consulting, and I was wondering whether anyone had any experience doing something similar/advice regarding the best way to break into the field.
If anyone knows about opportunities specific to medical students (for example I have read about Life Science Consultants) that would also be appreciated.
Background: I have no previous experience in consulting.
Life sciences consulting is actually a pretty common graduate jthat almost exclusively hires people with degrees such as yours (medicine / biomedical sciences / biology). Lots of large consulting firms have specific life sciences / healthcare roles but these can be very different despite the similar names of the roles (e.g analyst / associate in the life sciences / healthcare practice) so it’s a good idea to think about what exactly you are interested in e.g pharma / healthcare providers / biotech / med tech / healthcare services etc. As well as the big jake consulting firms that have life sciences practices, there are also lots of smaller firms that do purely life sciences consulting such as ZS associates, clear view, Putnam etc
Thank you so much for your reply, this has been very helpful and informative
Do you have work authorization for UK? If you do not, it can limit your options. Given you would qualify as a diversity candidate, you can try networking with people having a similar background as you at some of the consulting firms that interest you. They can give you helpful pointers, perhaps even put you in the recruiting pipeline.
The MBB firms love hiring MD's. If I were you I'd find other MD's who work in consulting and DM them on linkedin. Since you are in such a unique position, I'm sure other MD --> consultants would be more than willing to help you out. When I interned at my MBB over the summer, I was on a healthcare/life sciences related case and there were 2 MDs on my team. They loved when other MDs join the firm.
What about other healthcare professionals?
DM me, I'm a med student transitioning to MBB. There's a large network of us I can plug you into.
