People who cruised through uni/college - did you hit a wall at MBB?
Hello all
I'll be starting at MBB in a few months and got a few questions.
Background: I'm lazy and never make any real effort - but i am fairly smart and good at talking, so i've got good grades/internships. I do a decent job, but i am sloppy and not proactive - just want to get things done so i can go home/do nothing
I am motivated by the thought being a consultant - the learning curve, projects, $$$ and the exit ops - but i dont think i actually realise what its like.
If you are similar to me - did you hit the wall once you started in a real job? Starting to get a reality check and realized i probably never worked more than 40 hours in a week during my entire life.
Any advice on how to step up is highly appreciated - especially from people who are also super lazy by nature
Thanks in advance!
I was the same way in university, the issue is in the real world. There are more consequences than just getting a bad grade. You don’t get to find bullshit reasons to get extensions for your work, you can get fired for poor performance, and the industry is small so your reputation can follow you. It definitely gave me a rude awakening.
Yeah, and MBB is among the most intense of jobs. There are constant deadlines to hit, and the expectations are very high. I’d imagine someone like OP would make out fine in most corporate jobs due to his smarts (and the fact that people in industry jobs aren’t as intense about their work), but at MBB you gotta put in the hours.
I’m sure OP can adjust and do fine. And if it doesn’t work out he will find something else that’s a better fit.
Same thing here. Never worked more than 5-10 hours a week at uni and now at MBB. You do get to step up slightly but you can still do better than most while procrastinating until the last minute so you probably won't change much.
I cruised through school and university (having said this cramming 2 years worth of content for exams at Oxford were stressful) and joined McKinsey London.
My first study was brutal. Consistent 80-100 hour weeks for a few months for everyone (including the EM and Partner) as our client had a meltdown. Definitely learned how to work hard, under quite a bit of pressure and with few breaks (if any). It set me up well to crush future studies, although it was tough in the moment.
My advice would be to allow yourself to be thrown in the deep end. It's a humbling experience, teaches you a lot and gives you credibility going forward. There are very low expectations of you for the first 6 months, so this is truly the best time to embrace the learning experience.
Maybe we should meetup at the Post... Same experience at Oxford and now McKinsey London BA
Good chance we may already know each other. Pm me!
