Phone Call with MBB Senior Partner Opinion
I'm a sophomore at a non-target and I reached out to one of the very few alums we have at MBB for an informational interview. My intent was for him to ask for my resume at the end of the call and that didn't happen. When I asked him if networking into MBB was my best shot, he said that his MBB doesn't work that way and recruitment online and reaching out to recruiters at a target nearby was my best bet. Besides this, I think the conversation went pretty well. I sent him a thank you email and he replied saying he enjoyed our conversation and would be happy to help. I'm confused if he actually wants to help. What should I do?
He did help. He gave you advice. Now it's up to you to follow it. I'm not sure what more you'd expect from him.
When your application comes up for review, the partner can speak up for you, which could help. But almost every other applicant has done the same thing and will also have people to speak on their behalf. That's why "MBB doesn't work that way." They're some of the most desired firms in the world for college grads, so the application process is structured and very competitive. You'll need to go through it like everyone else.
Once you apply, follow up with him letting him know that you've applied
I would ask if he can connect you to said target recruiters, as a way of introduction. Also see if he'd be willing to connect you with other people at his firm that he may have mentioned- other people in the office, more junior people, etc.
Ask if he knows any hiring managers. This is the best and fastest way to interview and get into a company.
