Pivot from STEM MS to consulting advice

Hello all, this is my first post here. I am currently a PhD student in the STEM field who is looking to make a transition into consulting. I  decided not to continue to a PhD and will complete an MS in May 2026.

I am looking to make a transition into consulting as I enjoy problem-solving based on data-driven analysis. My background is research-heavy, working on complex biological problems, large data sets, and machine learning algorithms that I am trying to translate into the business world. I am currently located in the Boston area, and would like to target MBB or T2 firms.

I would appreciate any guidance in this process, as I am quite new to this.

Some questions:

  1. What are the highest impact steps in the next 6-9 months (internships, case prep, networking/outreach)?
  2. Given an MS in a STEM field with no prior business background whats the most realistic entry point?
  3. Which firms are more open to advanced degree candidates without a business background?
  4. Finally, how should I position the decision to leave the PhD to complete an MS degree during the interview process?

I am happy to share my resume in the DM if that helps. Thanks in advance for any help!
