Project Management - Approaches to take
In addition to using projects for development of products and services, firms are increasingly using projects for organization- or “enterprise”-wide initiatives. According to a recent study, 71 percent of all software development projects result in failure. Project and organizational goals are often not achieved; there are cost overruns, schedule delays, and/or stakeholder dissatisfaction or apathy. These failures can threaten the ability of organizations to survive and prosper.
How do you respond to the increasing demand in project management? What approaches do you take provide the best service to your clients?
I am still young and starting out but this is the sole reason why i want to attain my PMP as well as my MBA and CFA... they all will be beneficial
Project Management is kind of outside the scope of this forum. However, most projects fail because of internal politics. People want their own ideas to go forth, or they set unrealistic budgets because they know it will be politically popular. No amount of project management will stop this.
Aren't consulting "projects" still projects? Don't they need to be managed? Would that be considered project management? (or engagement management?) Other titles for the role: Project Leader (BCG?) Some projects are even "Implementation" that require a PMO? (Project Management Office) Am curious to understand why it's outside of scope... (sorry for the many questions it's how we speak in my current employer)
I think the OP may be under the impression projects fail due to a lack of project management. This is rarely the case. Most large scale implementations have ready-made frameworks from both the vendor and consulting firms that can be applied. The real reason they fail is the people involved changing requirements, not wanting to adopt new workflows or technology, etc. Most of the time it's a change management issue.
