Re-recruiting

So I'm a junior in college and just went through the recruiting cycle. It went ok, I ended up at a boutique consulting firm. I got so many interviews but didn't case the best so didn't land those offers. I want to re-recruit next year for full time for a larger firm. If I already networked w people at those firms, is it awkward to reach out again next year and ask for another coffee chat even though I already had one (and also considering that I got rejected after 1st/2nd round and am trying again)?

Someone who recruited twice please give advice

Re-recruiting for a larger firm after an initial attempt is not uncommon, and reaching out again for coffee chats can be a smart move if done tactfully. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this:

  1. Acknowledge the Past Interaction: When reaching out to someone you’ve already networked with, start by referencing your previous conversation. For example, “Hi Name, I hope you’re doing well! We connected last year when I was recruiting for [Firm Name], and I really appreciated the insights you shared about [specific topic].”

  2. Show Growth and Progress: Highlight how you’ve grown since your last interaction. Mention the skills you’ve developed, the experience you’ve gained at your current boutique consulting firm, or how you’ve improved in areas like casing. This demonstrates that you’ve taken steps to address any gaps from the previous cycle.

  3. Express Genuine Interest: Reiterate your interest in the firm and explain why you’re re-recruiting. For example, “I’m planning to re-recruit for full-time roles next year, and I remain very interested in [Firm Name] because of [specific reason]. I’d love to reconnect and hear your advice on how I can best position myself this time around.”

  4. Be Respectful of Their Time: Keep your message concise and polite. Suggest a short coffee chat or phone call, and make it clear that you value their time. For example, “If you’re available, I’d greatly appreciate 10-15 minutes of your time to catch up and hear your thoughts.”

  5. Follow Up Strategically: If they don’t respond initially, don’t be discouraged. As WSO threads suggest, persistence is key, but it should be delicate. Wait a couple of weeks before following up, and consider varying your approach (e.g., sending a message on a weekend or attaching a relevant article or update).

  6. Leverage New Connections: If you feel awkward reaching out to the same people, consider expanding your network within the firm. Use LinkedIn to identify other professionals at the firm and initiate new coffee chats. This can help you build a broader base of support.

  7. Prepare Thoroughly: Since you mentioned casing as a challenge, make sure you’re better prepared this time. Use resources like WSO’s networking and case prep guides to refine your skills. Being well-prepared will leave a stronger impression during coffee chats and interviews.

Remember, re-recruiting is not unusual, and many candidates successfully land offers on their second attempt. Firms value persistence and growth, so as long as you approach it professionally and show improvement, it won’t be awkward to reconnect. Good luck!

U should stay in touch with them. Send an update on how you did this cycle. Say ur excited about the summer but remain interested in xyz firm full time. Take the time to thank them for whatever guidance they provided. Try to be specific here. Then reach back during the spring to reconnect.
