Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips for breaking into sustainability consulting and making the most of your time on campus:
Target Firms: While sustainability consulting is a growing field, many traditional consulting firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain (MBB) have dedicated sustainability practices. Additionally, boutique firms like ERM (Environmental Resources Management), BSR (Business for Social Responsibility), and SustainAbility specialize in this area. Research these firms and their sustainability-focused projects to identify where your interests align.
Networking: Start reaching out to alumni or professionals in sustainability consulting. Use LinkedIn or your school’s alumni network to connect with people in these firms. Informational interviews can provide insights into the industry and help you build relationships.
Campus Involvement:
Join or lead sustainability-focused clubs or initiatives on campus. This demonstrates your commitment to the field.
Organize events or workshops related to sustainable business practices.
Collaborate with professors on sustainability research or projects.
Skill Development:
Gain expertise in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics, carbon accounting, and sustainable supply chain management.
Take relevant courses or certifications in sustainability, such as GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) or SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board).
Internships: Look for internships in sustainability roles, even if they’re not consulting-specific. Experience in corporate sustainability, environmental NGOs, or green startups can be valuable.
Storytelling: Develop a strong narrative about why you’re passionate about sustainability and how your finance background complements this interest. Highlight leadership roles and tangible impacts you’ve made in sustainability initiatives.
By combining these steps with consistent effort, you’ll position yourself well for a career in sustainability consulting. Good luck!
Navigated the same thing in my time. It's tough to break into because it's a relatively niche field and many of the roles (in my experience) look for envi sci candidates as opposed to business school. I think the best route/plan is to do traditional consulting for a year or two and then pivot to an industry position within sustainability? Would love to hear other opinions because I'm currently trying to figure out the same thing, just a few years later...
