Splitting Profits From Music Sales
Hi Everyone,
A local musician has offered to hire me as his marketing intern in exchange for a percentage of his music sales. This sounds fantastic. I like to trust but verify; is there a way I can legally make sure that the profit from his music sales are split between us?
The simple answer is to sign a contract that explicitly states what percentage of revenue you’ll receive from different revenue streams (I.e. ticket sales, streams, etc.).
I would just keep in mind that royalties from platforms like Spotify and other streaming services is usually very low. Artists normally receive between $0.006 to $0.008 per play so getting a sliver of this will usually be a negligible amount of income.
Harvey,
While I agree that he needs to sign a contract, there are a lot of things that he needs to know about the artist before signing. Plus, the artist won't net anything close to that much for a single play. Distribution is done on a CPM basis (ex. Spotify pays its artists with a strong US footprint on average $3 CPM. So they make $3 per 1000 streams.) You do the math from there. This may be a good deal for the OP or it may not. There's a whole lot of questions that I have that need to be answered as well, as that can be used to determine what the value received might be.
@shafi1248" shoot me a PM and we can discuss this further. I have some pretty good insight into this and wanted to off-line the conversation because I have a few questions that are better asked in private for you.
