S&T --> Consulting
Hi everyone,
I'm a Junior at a target school, and am working at a BB S&T (think top-3) this summer. Will this experience line me up for full-time interviews with MBB come next year? Obviously the answer is normally yes, but I have a ~3.4 GPA, lower than the regular MBB applicant. Will a great resume let me get over this low GPA, even with very limited leadership roles as well?

How do you know you don't want to do trading if you haven't even started your internship yet?
Piece of advice: do the internship first and then see how you feel. After all, it's far too late in the year to do anything about the fact that you are working in S&T this summer.
Also, I'm not sure jumping into consulting without any idea of the lifestyle is a good thing. People I knew at McK worked 9 am to 2 am and traveled 4 days a week! Do you really want to increase your hours so much for less money? The work in consulting is often pretty shitty too, writing powerpoints and fiddling with excel all day.
Why do you assume working at a "top-3" S&T makes a "great resume" for consulting?
Not saying you can't, but work extra hard at case studies and networking as the S&T internship probably isn't going to do wonders for you.
I would disagree - people have gotten offers at MBB with worse work experience. I'm sure consulting recruiters won't laugh at you if you have GS/MS/JPM on your resume.

There isn't a whole lot of overlap between S&T and consulting imo.

Hey guys,
I'm currently interning at a BB S&T in NYC, but I'm starting to realize that I would probably enjoy consulting more than S&T or any other finance job.
How easy is it to go from an S&T internship to consulting full time though? I've heard that going from IBD to consulting is fairly common, but since S&T is purely markets/finance and doesn't have any business/strategy work, would it be considerably harder?
Brief overview: top 25 undergrad, finance major, 3.5 GPA, middle-ish BB
Anyway, I'm sure that every situation is unique but I'm just curious if anyone's done it before or has an idea of how hard it would be. Thanks!
Definitely seems possible assuming the consulting firms come to campus to conduct interviews. I don't think having the S&T internship will hurt at all; I know people who got interviews with a lot less on their resume assuming good grades and extracurriculars.
Its completely possible, I seen it done a lot, but most people from MBB had internships at top BB although I have seen lower occasionally. Basically from a finance prospective I think its about as hard to get into Goldman/MS as MBB so its not super easy, but you can definitely do it! Practice cases and come up with a good reason for the switch other than you don't like banking
I agree. I think that if you show you are a strong candidate the last thing is being able to sell why you are eager to enter consulting and make the switch and then acing the case, of course!
