Study path to big 4 consulting

Hello, I’m a student in Italy and I’m thinking about going in big 4 consulting, but I don’t really have the money to pay for Bocconi or other prestigious universities. I was thinking about going to my local university for my bsc and eventually doing the last 2 years in Bocconi. I don’t plan to stay in Italy and I would possibile like to go to London or New York. Do you think I’ll have a chance?

To break into Big 4 consulting, your path can be strategic even without starting at a prestigious university like Bocconi. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap tailored to your situation:

1. Local University for BSc

  • Focus on Academic Excellence: A strong GPA (ideally 3.7+ or equivalent) is critical. Big 4 firms value academic performance, especially in quantitative or business-related fields.
  • Internships and Extracurriculars: Secure internships during your undergraduate years, even if they’re with smaller firms or local companies. Leadership roles in student organizations or case competitions can also boost your profile.

2. Transition to Bocconi for MSc

  • Leverage Bocconi’s Reputation: Completing your MSc at Bocconi will give you access to its strong alumni network, career services, and recruitment opportunities. Big 4 firms often recruit directly from Bocconi for both Italian and international offices.
  • Target Internships at Big 4: During your MSc, aim for internships at Big 4 firms in Italy or other European offices. This will give you a foot in the door and valuable experience.

3. Positioning for International Opportunities

  • Networking: Use Bocconi’s alumni network to connect with professionals in London or New York. Attend career fairs, alumni events, and LinkedIn outreach to build relationships.
  • Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like CFA, CPA, or even a relevant analytics course. These can make you stand out, especially if you’re targeting roles in strategy or corporate finance.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is essential for roles in London or New York. If you’re not already fluent, invest time in improving your language skills.

4. Alternative Pathways

  • If Bocconi is financially challenging, consider applying for scholarships or exploring other top European universities with strong finance or consulting programs (e.g., ESADE, HEC Paris, or Rotterdam School of Management).
  • Another option is to gain experience at a smaller consulting firm or in a related field (e.g., audit, finance) and then transition to Big 4 consulting later.

5. Breaking into London or New York

  • London: Easier to access from Europe. Start with a Big 4 role in Italy or another EU country, then transfer internally to a London office.
  • New York: More challenging due to visa requirements. You’ll likely need to gain experience in Europe first and then pursue an MBA or transfer through an internal Big 4 program.

Final Thoughts

Your plan is solid, and with the right focus on academics, internships, and networking, you can absolutely make it to Big 4 consulting. Remember, many professionals in Big 4 started from non-target schools and worked their way up through determination and strategic moves. Keep your end goal in mind, and don’t hesitate to leverage every opportunity!

If you want to go to London/NY you’ll either have to study there or go to Big 4 Milan/Rome spend 2-3 years minimum and then go either on a secondment or permanently.
To get to big 4 Milan/Rome ideally I think you have to do a degree in a business school (LUISS/Bocconi obv bocconi is much better)

Do you think i have to do the bachelor degree there too or just the last 2 years are good? Also I’m spending 4 months in London in a high school next autumn, but I don’t know it that’s going to help getting a career there. Thank you for your reply.
