Studying International Business for Consulting?
Hey Everyone!
Quick Question: Will concentrating in international business (Berkeley calls it Global Management Concentration) be the most appealing route to enter consulting on an international scope (I'd like to consult around in Asia). Or should I concentrate in other fields, such as Marketing or Management, and specifically ask/hope that I get placed on projects in Asia.
More Detail, read on if you'd like clarification: I really want to travel around Asia and do strategic consulting. My career counselor speaks in metaphors, which is really annoying, but from my interpretation of his, "road map" metaphor, getting a Global Management Concentration in your undergrad is useless, because you won't be able to get a job out of college in international business. However, if you go on to get your MBA, then your competitive in the job market.
"International Business" programs are a school's way of luring international students so they can charge them international tuition fees. In my experience, there is no such thing as "international businss". Yeah, there are cultural difference across continents and obviously the languages are different, but most global business people speak english and if you take an hour and read about Asian customs online, you'll learn an entire program's worth of "international business".
Study actual fields: finance, accounting, marketing, etc...
bullshit degree
a real degree is an engineering degree (mathematics, physics, chemistry)
Speaking of bullshit business majors for consulting, I've gotten the feeling majoring in finance is more preferrable than majoring in management for the consulting profession (which is odd no doubt for a career named management consulting).
Discuss.
