Switch office for return offer

Hi all - just received a return offer for a large MBB office. Was thinking of switching to another large office for Full-time for personal reasons. Anyone know how the process works? Is it frowned upon by recruiters?

Thanks

Switching offices after receiving a return offer at an MBB firm is possible, but it depends on several factors. Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Process: The process for switching offices typically involves reaching out to the recruiting team or HR at your current office. You’ll need to provide a compelling reason for the switch, such as personal or family-related circumstances. Be prepared to explain why the new office aligns better with your situation.

  2. Recruiter Perspective: While it’s not necessarily frowned upon, it can be challenging. Offices often have specific headcount needs, and switching may depend on whether the desired office has capacity for additional hires. Smaller or highly sought-after offices may be more difficult to transfer into unless you have a strong, unique case.

  3. Compelling Story: Having a clear and logical reason for the switch is crucial. For example, if you have family ties or a significant personal reason for relocating, it’s more likely to be considered favorably. Without a strong rationale, it might be harder to justify the move.

  4. Timing: The earlier you communicate your intent to switch, the better. Waiting too long could complicate the process, as offices finalize their headcount and staffing plans.

  5. Advice: If you’re at an M7 MBA program, you may have more flexibility to recruit for a different office during the process. However, if you’re already tied to a specific office, ensure your reasoning is solid and approach the conversation professionally.

Ultimately, switching offices is feasible but requires careful planning and communication.

Depends on personal circumstance. I know they are very understanding if it's a family matter (e.g. parent in bad health), but less so if you just like another city more. You should've talked to your recruiter before you got the return offer, but better late than never.

Yes, it is somewhat frowned upon but depends on firm, generally they want to discourage gaming the system. Know several who have voiced they wish they did not try it due to networks/etc.
