Switching to Consulting 3 Years After Graduating
I graduated from a non-target with a finance degree, low GPA (2.8), one decent internship and high-level campus roles (all relative of course). I moved to DC and worked on econ policy in Congress for two years before leaving the Hill. I now work on financial regulation in the private sector (think a combination of econ and lobbying). I was fortunate to have substantive policy responsibilities as a young staffer and made some quality connections along the way.
I am interested in switching over to a finance role but am trying to get insight on where my background might be attractive to employers. I want to temporarily leave politics to make more money and avoid the current chaos.
I've bounced around ideas, and most have told me I would be a good fit in financial consulting: good communicator, explain economic & financial trends well, background in data analysis, familiar with the regulatory climate etc.
My concern is having a low GPA from a non-target. I didn't prioritize grades in undergrad and worked throughout college, while holding too many leadership roles on campus. Most jobs in my industry no longer ask for GPA but refer instead to your network and work product. I assume trying to switch into consulting will require a GPA check.
Obviously, I'm not targetting MBB and recognize Deloitte, PwC types would be a serious stretch. Does anyone have any tips on my path forward? I'm afraid my only option may be busting it on the GMAT and rebranding myself after an MBA. Of course, the GPA would still hold me back in b school applications.
Thanks for any thoughts.
