Switching to consulting from research in OW?

Currently doing research in OW aka knowledge services. Ive been sold the dream that OW accommodates employee development and will allow you to try out different things within the firm as long as you request for it. How realistic/possible is it to make the switch from research to consulting? Is this common in consulting firms in general? Given that consultants have to go through a rigourous selection process and case interviews etc, im not sure that itd be that simple to simply use this "back door" method and become a consultant.

Thanks for the reply. That is what i believe as well, however based on experience how likely are individuals in support roles able to transition into consultant roles? From a previous thread, someone mentioned it to be harder than breaking into FO from BO in s&t
