The Social Aspect at IB vs MBB?
Hi there,
I have often heard about how at the analyst level at investment banks, although the hours are brutal and one would be hard-pressed to find any time to hang out with non-work friends, you develop great and close relationships with your fellow analysts, and that the camaraderie among analysts is strong.
If the above statement is true, how does that compare to to entry-level positions at MBB firms?
If you're traveling all the time, and going back to your hotel room every night, is working at MBB a lot more isolating, in the sense that you don't get to develop close relationships with your coworkers?
I know the above might not be very clearly worded, please let me know if clarification is needed.
I worked in consulting but not at MBB. Had to do loads of traveling and your right. Going back to a hotel each night is very lonely. If you have people around your age group, then you do socialize with them and this can be fun. So, the social aspect really depends on the client account size, team structure etc..
Investment Banking -> Social Life (Originally Posted: 01/13/2012)
I'm strongly considering investment banking and consulting as jobs. I've weighed the pros and cons of each and am still trying to decide some things. A career in finance is attractive but having a social life is very important to me - at least once every week or two, I try to go to electronic music shows for example. In IB it seems that would be pretty much impossible. Would I be able to put in 2 years or so at a top firm and then transition (even if I needed to take a pay cut) to a job with more reasonable hours and freedom?
