Tier 2 Consulting NYC to MBB Smaller Office

I am currently going into my second year at a tier 2 consulting shop in NYC (OW/S&/S&O) and although I have enjoyed my previous year at the firm, I no longer want to be in New York. While I may be able to change offices through my company's internal mobility structure, I also see this geographic switch as an opportunity to lateral and move up tiers in the consulting world (to MBB).

There are a fair amount of posts on this forum about tier 2 consultants trying to move to MBB and the difficulty of being an experienced hire, but I'm curious to know if it helps to be moving cities when trying to change firms. I applied to MBB out of undergrad but exclusively applied to be in the NYC area and I think I'll have a better shot at a smaller office, especially because I grew up in a city with a strong, but less competitive recruiting profile (think Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Charlotte).

For more information about me, I graduated from a target (HYP) with a 3.8 and am willing to restart as a first year analyst at MBB. The other option is obviously to stay at my firm another year and be miserable in NYC before trying to go to bschool and then lateral afterwards, but I want to explore this avenue 1) to increase my quality of life, but 2) to improve my bschool prospects as well. Anyone have experience with something similar or advice about my chances of doing this? I have numerous contacts at each MBB firm from undergrad and a few each in the city I'd like to apply to, so reaching out to them about this possibility seems like the best place to start.
