Valuation to RX
Hey all I was hoping to get some insight into a current situation. I am an analyst at a well-known valuation firm and was hoping to recruit into RX consulting at one of the BIG 3 in the industry in another year or two. I've read that people in RX come from a wide range of backgrounds from audit to IB. I was wondering If vals would be a good way to get in or if anyone has suggestions for recruiting in.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a valuation background to RX consulting is definitely feasible, but it requires strategic planning. RX professionals indeed come from diverse backgrounds, including audit, IB, and valuation, so your experience can be a solid foundation. Here are some actionable steps to improve your chances:
Leverage Your Valuation Skills: RX consulting often involves financial modeling, valuation, and understanding capital structures. Highlight your expertise in these areas, as they are directly relevant to RX work.
Network Strategically: Join industry-specific organizations like the Turnaround Management Association (TMA), which offers networking opportunities and educational events. Networking is crucial in this niche field, especially for firms like A&M, AlixPartners, and FTI.
Target the Right Firms: While the "Big 3" in RX consulting (A&M, AlixPartners, FTI) often favor experienced hires, you can also explore opportunities at Big 4 firms, smaller boutiques, or spin-offs from top RX groups like Houlihan Lokey, PJT, or Lazard. These can serve as stepping stones.
Develop a Broad Skillset: RX consulting requires more than just financial expertise. Familiarize yourself with operational, legal, and strategic aspects of business turnarounds. Demonstrating a well-rounded understanding will set you apart.
Be Prepared for the Competitive Nature: RX is a relatively small industry with fewer open positions compared to other fields. Cast a wide net and be open to various entry points, including mid-market or smaller firms.
Showcase Your Ability to Learn Quickly: RX consulting demands fast execution and adaptability. Emphasize your ability to learn on the job and handle high-pressure situations effectively.
By combining your valuation background with targeted networking and skill-building, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for RX consulting roles. Good luck!
