Would a PE internship help for consulting?
Sophomore internship. The PE firm leans more to infra/energy. Sophomore year in college. Thinking about going to IB/Con, but not sure yet. Wondering if PE would help for both (good for IB, but not sure for consulting)
Is there an offer or do have enough traction to believe it's a possibility? Otherwise you're putting the cart before the horse.
If yes then I think it helps for multiple industries. With consulting it's somewhat luck of the draw what the perfect internship is because it's dependent on their current projects (niche firms excepted).
My personal opinion as someone who just transferred into consulting from a FAR less optimal background than anything with PE is that this won't hurt. There's three possible outcomes for a PE internship: you help do scut work (better than it sounds because you'll almost certainly be involved in preparing client-facing materials), you help do financial analysis scut work (which helps for both finance and strategy questions), or you're looking at more operational problems which is great for most strategy practices.
I can't say for sure because it depends on what they have you doing but there's a strong probability the answer is "yes" IF (and only if) you can communicate the work in a way that sounds relevant
PE is a great internship for the reasons provided above. To add a bit more color:
1) Preparing materials for your investment committee/others will show the ability to communicate complex topics in a concise fashion. Hugely valuable to consulting.
2) Doing financial analyses will show that you know your way around Excel, and how a spreadsheet can reflect real world activities.
3) Operational experience shows you know what turns the gears in a business. Definitely important.
4) Industry/company commercial diligence is the bread and butter of a strategy practice. If you are doing legit commercial due diligence, you will be very well prepared to recruit for firms with a strong CDD presence (e.g. Bain, LEK, S&, EY-P, and to a lesser extent, McK and BCG).
