Advice urgently needed : Corporate Development

All,

Could urgently use some advice. Worked in a big 4 London fdd (tmt) and had a horrible experience. Enjoyed the scope of projects but ran into some trouble with office politics and long story short ; survived a pip despite being told there was a 99% chance I would be fired only to be fired for failing my assurance exam for my accounting qualifications.

Not looking for any sympathy and I know full well I had a great opportunity and blew it. The way the UK market works, there is a great deal of emphasis on getting your accounting qualification so I definitely know this is something I want to pursue - lot of the mid market funds and boutique ib's specifically request this.

Right now I have a role for corporate development at an insurance firm. The manager specifically cut out the bs around trying to sell this as a global firm with wonderful opportunities. At the heart of it, poor decision making led to the company making a heavy loss and as a result, the ceo was fired and new management put in place. The role is essentially trying to turn around a loss making company profitable. Only issue I have is that this is a newly created role whereby it is just me and a manager on the corporate development team. As such, it is very hard to gauge the appetite for acquisitions and given Corp development is a broad role, I'm concerned it may not provide a tangible m&a experience. Having said that, surely there is a reason for creating this opening? Doesn't make sense to create a new corporate development role if there wasn't acquisitions planned.

I did ask at the interview and was told m&a will play a role but is not the focal point. Just wanted to ask advice on whether I should accept this or continue the job hunt. Don't mean to come across as ungrateful because I consider myself lucky that someone is offering corporate development and full sponsorship for my remaining exams. At the same time I'm very aware that I'm moving out of the safety net of a blue chip firm and essentially venturing into the abyss. At some point I'd love to return to the tech space where all my fdd experience is in but I'm really struggling to find any direction. Would appreciate any advice.

I should also add - it sucks you had to leave B4 that way, but this role sound better to me. I don’t see the problem really - other people will work 5 to 10 years slogging away in big4 to move into a Corp dev role. You just got there early and cut out all the bullshit shite big4 life.

Big4 is good for the experience to get a role like yours - you got there sooner - and basically staying there longer unless you want to and are able to make partner is a waste of time and effort. Good work son.
