Canadian Corporate Banking Interviews

Just looking for some colour on the degree of knowledge I'd need for corporate banking interviews

From what I've seen it looks like majority of the questions just revolve around knowing what CB is/does but would rather be overprepared

For Canadian corporate banking interviews, preparation is key, and being overprepared is always better than underprepared. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Understanding Corporate Banking Basics

  • Corporate banking primarily involves providing traditional banking services to large institutional clients. This includes corporate lending, advising on debt capital raising, risk management (FX/Interest Rates/Commodity derivatives), treasury and cash management, and trade finance.
  • Be familiar with the role of corporate banking analysts, which includes underwriting and executing credit transactions (like syndicated loans), advising clients on capital structure, liquidity, and capital distributions, and managing ongoing client relationships.

2. Key Technical Knowledge

  • Credit Analysis Skills: Understand credit ratios, asset-based lending, cash flow lending, and how covenants work. The most important credit metric to know is the debt/EBITDA leverage ratio, as it’s a key factor in pricing.
  • Loan Syndications: Study what syndicated loans are, the difference between pro rata and institutional loans, and what a term loan B is.
  • Capital Structure: Have a solid grasp of capital structure fundamentals and how corporate banking fits into the broader financial ecosystem.

3. Modeling and Financial Analysis

  • Corporate banking analysts develop skills in financial modeling, running processes, and structuring deals. Be prepared to discuss your experience or understanding of these areas.

4. Behavioral and Fit Questions

  • Be ready to articulate why you’re interested in corporate banking and how your skills align with the role. Highlight any relevant experience in finance, accounting, or client relationship management.

5. Preparation Resources

  • If you have access to resources like the Breaking Into Wall Street Financial Modeling Fundamentals Course, it’s worth reviewing the video on credit ratios and financial metrics relevant to corporate banking.
  • Familiarize yourself with the deal process in corporate credit and the fundamentals of corporate credit analysis.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll be well-prepared to handle both technical and behavioral questions in your interviews. Best of luck!
