Do you consider human resources to be a bane or benefit to your firm?

To all employees in HR: this question is not meant to be offensive. I am new into the corporate environment so you should not consider my opinions to be valid.

I am not a fan of my HR division. The resource organization we hired was an independent labor site for recruitment and hiring solution services that became our HR division.

They feel they are entitled into micromanaging our group projects and directions. Specifically, they asked me to help them understand our current client situation and project service (which I have no problem explaining to them). When we rejected her idea for how to make it better, she went straight to our management for being close minded. We have been working on this project for months and are not going to restructure our decisions from a woman who has no experience or study in our field. Moreover, her solution was not material, just a half baked answer for us to actually do instead (she was just giving ideas, no implementation on how or how she would help).

My boss was even more mad. They forced us to attend one of those motivation and positive training sessions on how to work better as a group (ironically). My boss flipped out on the coordinator when he was called negative and pessimistic. The coordinator was one of those peppy speakers who tried to cover their lack of talent through being loud and confident in whatever field.

I am sorry if this sounds like a rant, I just get so angry when an office dedicated to preserving system functionality causes such a rift in organizational behavior. I am sure good HR handle issues of diversity, harassment, etc. well. I just don't know where I stand on how to support their influence in my work life.

I appreciate the thoughts....

HR can be a benefit. I've worked at places with little to no HR presence and it was the wild west. I've also worked at places that were too HR centric and it blew. As long as they are a resource and not trying to steer the ship it can be a benefit.

Why does HR have so much involvement in your day to day stuff to begin with? What possible input can HR have in any finance function? What do you do? Sounds like you're in a unique situation here.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Echoing this comment. I'm all the way back in middle office these days and, even in middle office, HR doesn't have a fraction of the clout to pull this sort of stuff on my team.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.
