How to become a CEO?

I am an Indian from a middle class family. Suffice to say, I am first generation student. Every stage of academic choice had been of a trial and error. I made my choices based on the information I had at that point. I chose Engineering because I liked Maths and Physics. During engineering I developed penchant for coding. Hence, I worked as a software developer for 2 years. Though I was good coder, I realized I won't enjoy programming as a career. Also, to climb corporate ladder, MBA seemed good fit. Hence, I completed MBA from India's best management institute. It's been two years, I have been working in a bank in Risk Management. No doubt, the job is good, however, it doesn't excite me anymore. I wish to be C-suite leader one day, let's say CEO.

From whatever research I have done, here are the few strategies I have thought about: 1. Grow in current role and make appropriate switches across different functions in the current company. The switch could be Risk Management --> Finance --> Strategy --> Marketing, etc. The order can vary. In this case the growth will be in spiral fashion but slow. 2. Pursue MS in Finance (1 year) and get into Consulting, IB, PE, VC, etc. MS will open global opportunities and put me directly into C-suite career path. 3. Switch to strategy/management consulting roles now. However, I feel it's bit late now. Moreover, people move from consulting to industry. Vice-versa rarely happens.

Constraints: 1. I am 28 2. I don't have strong financial background. I have been on my own.

I have potential and drive to reach my goal. What I miss is the direction. Any meaningful advice will be of a great help!

Advice from c suite executives at my company preach on doing great at your current role and become best friends with people who are in charge of promoting. Even with this expect 20 years.

Or

Do investment banking for 15-20 years, network with companies, and you'll be in the c suite

Another option could be to try to get involved with a new startup that you believe has potential. It’s risky but if it the company becomes a success you’re already near the top of it.
