How to get into a Strategic Finance role?
I want to go into a corporate role, something like Strategic Finance at a f500. I'm interested in strategic finance roles where I could use financial / analytical tools to provide support role for the company's strategic direction. By this I mean using accounting and finance to not keep score of past performance (i.e. FP&A, consolidation, reporting, variance analysis) type work but rather providing analytical support for strategic initiatives, helping to drive various internal improvement projects on finance side such as cost savings, process improvement, etc. Somewhere where I would be using investment analysis techniques including NPV, IRR, and DCF. Where and how do I network for these types of roles?
My background is:
Lower tier Ivy league School
3.8/4.0 GPA
Passed Level 1 of the CFA program
Currently working at a small-cap deep value equity HF
so corporate development. start with the large cap companies within the industry you're currently covering as you should already be familiar with the players, recent deals, and broader trends.
I work in strategic finance for a tech company. How long have you been out of school? Everyone on my team has a master's degree, not saying you definitely need one, but we definitely prefer it. Everyone on my team also has an IB background (except me).
It would be good to find specific roles via linkedin or indeed that you are interested in and see what the qualifications are. You also might be happy in a strategy role (we have a lot of ex McKinsey folks at my company).
Do you mind giving me a quick overview of what strategic finance encompasses at your firm?
Sure. We own the company wide 3 year strategy, modeling new business ventures and partnerships, and market opportunity sizing. We regularly work with and present to C-level execs, which is great for exposure, but sometimes you get burned when you work that closely to the surface of the sun.
Hey can I PM?
Sure

Start company. Do finance strategically
Strategic financial management includes not just managing a company's finances but also managing them with the goal of success, i.e., achieving the company's goals and objectives while also increasing shareholder value over time.
To get into the strategic financial role you need:
The transition from consulting to other roles.
Transitioning from the financial sector.
From an MBA or operational experience, make the transition.
Transitioning from the position of Chief of Staff.
