J&J Corp Finance Intern… what to expect?

Hi all,

Penultimate Year UK student here. I applied for a lot of Banking internships over the summer but didn’t get any S&T offers like I was hoping.

I plan to attempt to defer my offer in Commercial Banking shortly, as I have now formally accepted a placement offer from J&J and I think it will give me a much wider exposure to finance.

My team hasn’t been determined yet, but the hiring manager said ‘one of the core finance roles’ - can anyone decipher exactly what this might entail.

I will be honest, I’m not the greatest account and scraped through that module in my first year. I’d say I have an somewhat adequate understanding of valuation models and I’m decent with financial statements. (As Econ & Finance Students go)

As I was rather set on banking I have not done much research for CF, I’d be open to hearing anything from about J&J in particular, how to make the most of a CF Placement or what experience I could use during the placement to get some leverage for capital markets.

Hi there,

Congrats on your internship.

That is a good first step and in the case you like it, you can leverage that to go into the grad programme (J&J’s is one of the best FLDPs out there).

However, being in the UK, I would be very careful in interpreting the phrase “core finance”. American companies usually have sales arms/organizations in Europe. I did a finance internship at an American company (similar industry) in the UK myself. And what I found out is that it had nothing to do with what most of the people in WSO consider Corp Fin. It had to do more with accounting for sales, optimization of plans, and some sort of FP&A activities, maybe supply chain or even R&D financial planning.

However, that said, if you are absolutely sure that it will be Corp Fin (ie M&A, IR, Treasury) then you can be absolutely sure that it will be appreciated if you apply for another internship in IB and you can spin your experience a bit and tell them a good story.

Regarding knowledge of accounting, do not worry at all, they will teach you what you need to know, maybe give you a small booklet with some examples to practice. As long as you know a bit of excel you will be more than fine!

Plus, don’t get me wrong, whatever experience you get at J&J will be very useful, as you will learn a lot and you can use it in many different ways. I just wanted to warn you that it might not be exactly what you expect.

Best of luck with your internship!
