Offer Negotiation
Hi Monkeys, just wondering if anyone has gone through offer negotiations post IB? Currently received an offer for a Corporate Development role, Associate Manager level. Negotiating on the offer and HR sort of moving very slow with the process, not so responsive. Not sure if any of you here can provide some tips.
Timeline:
Sept 29th- offer call in the evening
Oct 1st- HR called again proving more detail to the compensation structure. I negotiated back asking for flexibility.
Oct 5th- I followed up, HR responded that he haven't heard back from the Director.
Oct 8th- I followed up again on whether if I can have the written offer with the current terms while the sign-on amount is pending. I'm planning to join and need to plan my notice period. (Long weekend for Canada this week)
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips to navigate your offer negotiation process effectively:
Be Patient but Persistent: It's not uncommon for HR to move slowly, especially when approvals from higher-ups are involved. Continue to follow up politely but firmly. For example, you can say, "I understand this might take some time, but I would appreciate an update as I need to plan my notice period accordingly."
Request a Written Offer: You're on the right track by asking for a written offer with the current terms. This ensures you have something concrete while waiting for the final details. If HR is hesitant, emphasize that having the written offer will help you plan your transition better.
Flexibility in Negotiation: If you're negotiating for a sign-on bonus or other benefits, remember to stay flexible. As suggested in WSO threads, you can ask for alternative forms of compensation like stock options, carried interest, or revenue sharing if the sign-on bonus is delayed or denied.
Anchor Your Expectations: Always anchor your negotiation with a number slightly above the market rate for the role. This gives you room to negotiate down if needed while still landing at a favorable number.
Leverage the Long Weekend: Since it's a long weekend in Canada, use this time to prepare a clear and concise follow-up email. Reiterate your interest in the role, your understanding of the timeline, and your willingness to work with them to finalize the details.
Stay Professional: Avoid ultimatums or showing frustration. As highlighted in WSO advice, you want the person you're negotiating with to feel motivated to help you, not pressured or annoyed.
Plan for Delays: If HR continues to delay, consider asking for a tentative start date or a timeline for when the pending details will be finalized. This shows you're proactive and serious about the role.
Remember, negotiating is a dance, and patience combined with strategic communication can lead to a favorable outcome. Good luck!

I’d say it’s mixed. Smaller firms usually have more flexibility to tweak comp, titles, or perks. Larger firms tend to be rigid, titles map to comp bands, PTO policies, bonus targets, etc., so there’s only so much HR can move.
My experience across a few Corp Dev roles:
Analyst → Manager (via external recruiter) Offer came in strong and well above my prior comp. Recruiter advised not to push too hard. I accepted and only downside is that I had to cover a small portion of relocation myself.
Next Manager offer
Sr. Manager offer HR called ahead to confirm the team wanted to extend an offer and asked if I was still good with the number I previously floated. I bumped it ~5% and they matched it. Bonus/PTO/etc. were again tied to title and not negotiable
