I don't know much about the finance group specifically, but can comment on the company as a whole. Pay is above average for F500. They move junior employees around a lot (which I think is a good thing for the employee, maybe less so for the company). Company culture is very distinctive and a bit hard to explain - lots of group meetings, internal networking (coffee and lunch meetings), corporate events, etc. Year end rankings are pretty important for compensation, promotions and mobility opportunities. Good work/life balance in most groups, including flexibility to work from home when needed (or regularly, if group appropriate). The Company is more female than male, with the exception of top leadership. One downside is probably a lack of geographic flexibility - they only have the NYC office in the US.

Not sure about pigeonholing from a corporate finance perspective.

Not true. Headquarters are in NYC but there are offices all over

Not for corporate positions.

Just doing a search on their site it shows some corporate jobs elsewhere (though majority seem to be NYC): http://jobs.americanexpress.com/go/finance-jobs/193458/

I don't work there but I have a few friends that do and have also been contacted by recruiters from amex so I have a decent picture of what the company is like, at least for the finance track. 1. For finance they like to rotate/move people every 18 months or so. This is a good thing. You learn new skills and I believe they encourage doing this well beyond your first few years as an analyst so you can continually learn. 2. Analysts do NOT receive bonuses. The salary for an analyst, depending on if they're first year or second year, is around 62-65k. Senior analysts are around 70k, but it doesn't seem like it takes too long to get promoted there (also, not sure if senior analysts are bonus eligible or if just regular analysts are exempt). 3. As far as learning the credit card industry pigeonholing you, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you have been at amex for 5+ years. People often worry that one set of experiences will pigeonhole you even at an early point in your career, but from my experience that has not been the case at all, especially within corporate finance. Perhaps it would be difficult to go from a consumer rewards points analytics group at amex to american airlines, but you could certainly transition to any other major financial institution's planning and analysis groups without too much headache. 4. Culture is supposed to be awesome. Everyone I know there works on average from 9 - 7, with quarter end / earnings being a little worse. But they definitely value work/life balance and company culture there.

Also, as far as post-MBA programs, their's is supposed to be pretty much #1 for corporate finance (American Airlines is up there too I believe). I'm guessing you're just graduating undergrad, but just thought I'd throw that tidbit out there.

Remember, once you're inside you're on your own. Oh, you mean I can't count on you? No. Good!
