So Cooked - No Job Offer Yet

This is def a pick me post so no worries if you don't waste your time reading.

Background

I go to a non - target and I'm studying accounting & finance. I have a decent GPA (~3.9) and have done a lot of extra curriculars. I had an internship this summer at a start up doing Corp Dev work but didn't get an offer due to my team being small and not having any openings.

Now

Its November and I still don't have a solid job offer (I have an accounting job offer). I really want to do something that involves financial modeling as it is something that I really enjoy. I have no clue what to do right now and am kind of looking for advice on how to handle my situation.

Future

I feel a bit lost on what to do next because I feel like the next recruiting cycle will be after year end. Here are the options that I am thinking of.

1) Accept my accounting job offer and keep looking for a finance position, then reneg if I find a good one. I will say that this feels really shitty.

2)Decline my accounting job offer and hopefully find a job that fits me eventually.

Advice

The main thing I'm worried about is that I have no clue what to do and am worried that I won't do anything involved with financial models. I would love to hear anyone's advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and advice for your situation:

Current Situation

  • Background: Non-target school, studying accounting & finance, GPA ~3.9, extracurriculars, summer internship in Corp Dev without a return offer.
  • Current Status: No solid job offer in finance, only an accounting job offer.

Options to Consider

  1. Accept the Accounting Job Offer and Continue Searching:

    • Pros:
      • Provides immediate employment and financial stability.
      • Keeps you engaged in the workforce, which can be beneficial for your resume.
      • Allows you to continue searching for a finance position without a gap in employment.
    • Cons:
      • Potential ethical concerns about reneging on an offer.
      • Might not align with your long-term career goals in financial modeling.
  2. Decline the Accounting Job Offer and Focus on Finding a Finance Position:

    • Pros:
      • Full focus on finding a job that aligns with your career aspirations.
      • No ethical dilemma of reneging on an offer.
    • Cons:
      • Risk of prolonged unemployment.
      • Financial instability without a job.

Advice and Next Steps

  • Networking: Leverage your network, including alumni, professors, and LinkedIn connections. Attend industry events and reach out to professionals in the field you are interested in.
  • Skill Enhancement: Continue to build and showcase your financial modeling skills. Consider taking additional courses or certifications to strengthen your resume.
  • Job Applications: Apply broadly to finance positions that interest you. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your financial modeling skills and relevant experience.
  • Recruitment Cycles: Be aware that the next major recruiting cycle might be after the year-end. Use this time to prepare and position yourself strongly for upcoming opportunities.

Conclusion

Given the current time (November 14th, 2024), it's crucial to make a decision soon. If financial stability is a priority, accepting the accounting job while continuing to search might be the best immediate step. However, if you are confident in your ability to secure a finance position soon, focusing solely on that might align better with your long-term goals.
