Dear reader, the internet has a lot of different viewpoint on whether to get a technical co-founder for your startup or not in the initial phase. There are very successful companies that did not have technical co-founders. I would like to avoid it (for an app-based startup) and keep the founder team very small. What's your take on that? Who started up without a technical co-founder and would like to share his/her experience? I appreciate all comments.

The view that you need a technical co-founder comes from the assumption that at least some of your company's competitive advantage is in the underlying tech. And thus if you place responsibility for your tech in the hands of someone who isn't tied down to your organization, you put yourself in a position where that outside individual (or inside individual who isn't sufficiently tied down) will effectively be able to shake you down later on. What that assumes, of course, is that your tech is a meaningful part of your unique value proposition.
