Hi there, am looking to lateral and would love to have your thoughts on the best HHs in London for a lateral move at Analyst / Associate level

Would be helpful to have your view on the best and worst ones, and why? Heard a lot of horror stories but appreciate some HH are stronger in Credit and lack in IB and vice versa?

do you know which private credit funds have mandated which HHs? Could you please also specify which strategy they mostly cover (eg direct lending, cap sol, opportunistic)?

For private credit headhunters in London, here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:

Top Headhunters for Private Credit in London

  1. PER (Private Equity Recruitment)

    • Widely regarded as one of the most legitimate headhunters for private credit, including direct lending, special situations, and other strategies.
    • Strong reputation across private credit and private equity mandates.
  2. Blackbrook

    • Known for handling mandates with decent-sized private credit funds.
    • Focused on private credit but less prominent in other areas like IB.
  3. Wood Street/Myrico

    • Mentioned in the context of fixed income mandates, though their relevance to private credit is less clear.
  4. Walker Hamill

    • Covers private equity and private credit mandates.
    • Known for being reliable and professional.
  5. Dartmouth Partners

    • More focused on IB but has been noted for private credit roles as well.
  6. Arkesden Partners

    • Primarily IB-focused but has some crossover into private credit.

Additional Headhunters Mentioned for Credit/PE

  • Hinton Rose
  • Melrose Partners
  • Angove Partners

Strategies Covered

  • Direct Lending: PER and Blackbrook are strong players here.
  • Special Situations/Opportunistic Credit: PER is again a standout.
  • Capital Solutions: Limited specific mentions, but PER and Blackbrook may have some coverage.

General Advice

  • Tailor Your Approach: Highlight your interest in private credit specifically when engaging with headhunters. If you express interest in too broad a range of roles, they may not prioritize you for credit-specific opportunities.
  • Reputation Matters: Some headhunters are stronger in private credit, while others excel in IB or PE. PER and Blackbrook are consistently noted as reliable for private credit.
  • Horror Stories: These often stem from mismatched expectations or lack of specialization. Stick to headhunters with a proven track record in private credit to avoid such issues.

If you're targeting specific funds, it’s worth reaching out to these headhunters directly to understand which mandates they are currently handling.

Pearse Partners and Dartmouth had a number of mandates with well known funds in the direct lending space. PER from above has not been great.

Lots of smaller firms with individual relationships hiring for different funds otherwise. Hard to tell since it sometimes depends on a team by team basis both on client side but also the experience with each HH team.

Any bad rumours regarding how they approach confidentiality? I heard some recruiters just spam your resume without asking you. Also is it common practice to hide your name / exact firm from your resume?

Have you heard about Blackbrook / KEA doing work in the space?

Thanks a lot btw, quite helpful

Never heard of anyone doing that, if this would come out it’s the end of your headhunting career.

What a lot of them do is telling you about amazing opportunities for the intro chat but don’t think they have mandates for all amazing roles.

Have not heard of the names you mentioned. It’s a people business, you need to find 2-3 firms you work with and that can give you some intel in the market, what’s coming, focus topics.
