Commercial banking at a Bulge Bracket?

Hi everyone, I’m curious about how commercial banking at a bulge bracket is in terms of structure, pay, wlb, etc, I live in a HCOL city on the west coast.

Something I like about commercial banking is the great wlb, is this also true at a BB? I know that corporate banking at the BB leads to a rough 60-70 hour a week schedule (while other banks have a better wlb for corporate) and I was wondering if commercial banking specifically at a BB also has worse hours compared to smaller banks (or other large banks like US Bank) from what I’ve researched, commercial banking is typically just a 40 hour work week, is this true at a BB as well?

I want a career as a relationship manager, how would that look like at a BB compared to other large banks or even smaller banks? I’m working towards building my resume so I can get a CB internship and my top choice currently is US Bank, which of the big banks is best for commercial banking?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about commercial banking at a bulge bracket (BB) bank:

Structure, Pay, and Work-Life Balance (WLB)

  • Structure: Commercial banking roles at BB banks can vary, but they generally involve client-facing positions such as Relationship Managers (RMs) and Portfolio Managers (PMs). RMs focus on bringing in deals and managing client relationships, while PMs handle the credit and risk aspects.
  • Pay: Compensation in commercial banking at BB banks can be lucrative, especially for RMs who bring in significant business. Bonuses are often tied to the volume and quality of deals originated.
  • Work-Life Balance:
    • General Insight: Commercial banking is known for better work-life balance compared to investment banking. Many commercial banking roles, including those at BB banks, typically involve around 40-hour work weeks.
    • Comparison to Corporate Banking: Corporate banking at BB banks often involves longer hours (60-70 hours per week). However, commercial banking tends to have more manageable hours, even at BB banks.
    • Smaller Banks vs. BB Banks: Smaller banks and regional banks like US Bank may offer slightly better work-life balance compared to BB banks, but the difference is not always significant.

Career as a Relationship Manager (RM)

  • At a BB Bank:
    • Opportunities: BB banks offer extensive resources, a wide range of products, and the prestige of a well-known brand, which can help in establishing and maintaining client relationships.
    • Compensation: RMs at BB banks can earn substantial compensation, especially if they are successful in originating large deals.
    • Work-Life Balance: While BB banks may have slightly longer hours compared to smaller banks, the work-life balance is generally favorable compared to other high-finance roles.
  • At Other Large Banks or Smaller Banks:
    • Opportunities: Smaller banks may offer a more personalized approach and potentially better work-life balance. However, they may not have the same range of products or brand recognition as BB banks.
    • Compensation: While still competitive, compensation at smaller banks may be lower than at BB banks, but this can vary based on the bank and the region.

Best Banks for Commercial Banking

  • US Bank: Known for a good work-life balance and a strong presence in commercial banking.
  • Other Large Banks: Banks like First Republic Bank and Silicon Valley Bank are noted for their strong commercial banking divisions, particularly in CRE and PE lending.

Additional Considerations

  • Networking and Internships: Securing a commercial banking internship often involves networking. Keep an eye out for campus recruiting events and leverage any connections you have in the industry.
  • Community Involvement: Being involved in community activities (e.g., Chamber of Commerce, professional organizations) can help generate leads and build a strong client base.
