F500 Insurance PC Team
Curious about everyone’s thoughts at starting out at F500 insurance company. The PC team focuses on Infra, AB, and Private-Placements. Would being at an insurance company not be the best look if I want to lateral to a true PC shop, IB, etc. Currently a senior, so always trying to figure out what I really want to do. Also curious about comp at the insurance level.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, starting out at a Fortune 500 insurance company on a Private Capital (PC) team focusing on Infrastructure, Asset-Backed (AB), and Private Placements can provide solid foundational experience. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
Lateral Moves to IB or True PC Shops: While working at an insurance company might not carry the same prestige as starting in Investment Banking or a dedicated Private Capital shop, the experience you gain in Infrastructure and Private Placements could still be valuable. Networking and demonstrating transferable skills will be key if you aim to lateral into IB or a more traditional PC role.
Compensation at Insurance Companies: Compensation at the insurance level tends to be lower than in IB or top-tier PC shops. However, it can still be competitive, especially for entry-level roles. The exact figures can vary depending on the company and location, but insurance firms often offer a better work-life balance compared to IB.
Career Trajectory: If you're considering a move to IB or PC, starting at an insurance company might require additional effort to position yourself for the transition. Pursuing certifications like the CFA or MBA down the line could also help bridge the gap.
Ultimately, if you're still exploring your career path, this role could be a good starting point to build relevant skills and gain exposure to the industry. However, if your long-term goal is IB or a top-tier PC shop, you may want to actively plan your next steps to align with that trajectory.

No it wouldn’t. Just focus on learning as much as possible and developing your underwriting skills when you start. Networking will be key. Develop your skills + build relationships you’ll be fine.
