Mid-level PC/Special Situation Recruiting

Hi guys, can you share any color on recruiting for mid-level professionals for direct lending/special situation (Senior Associare/VP) roles currently? Are you seeing many opportunities out there?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the mid-level job market for roles like Senior Associate or VP in direct lending and special situations is currently quite challenging. There seems to be a significant increase in the number of professionals at the associate level looking for better opportunities, but the availability of compelling roles is limited. This is partly due to cyclical factors and the overall market dynamics.

For instance, in real estate and related fields, the associate-level job market is described as "fickle," with limited openings and low compensation for professionals with around five years of experience. The jump to director/AVP is considered the most critical and challenging transition. Similarly, in direct lending, while there are transferable skills for exits to other credit-focused funds or even LBO funds, the opportunities at the mid-level are not as abundant or attractive as one might hope.

If you're targeting distressed or special situations investing, it's worth noting that transitioning from direct lending can be done, but it requires a steep learning curve due to the differences in skill sets, such as game theory, covenant work, and complex corporate structures. The earlier you make the switch, the better positioned you might be for long-term success.
